Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer will report to the Director of Manufacturing Engineering. The Manufacturing Engineer develops, maintains, and specifies manufacturing processes to manufacture Kopin’s product lines on an economical and efficient basis. This position will work closely with the product engineering and operations team to support transition to production, volume manufacturing, failure root cause analysis, yield, and thru-put improvements. 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with product engineering teams during the concept phase of new products to incorporate principle of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DMFA).
  • Lead DFMA initiatives by preparing Process Flow Charts, Product Risk Maps, and pFMEA to identify opportunities to reduce cycle time, improve yield and quality.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions as part of Failure Analysis investigations.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Create and maintain detailed work instructions and manufacturing procedures. Deliver necessary design documents & data for engineering builds and transition to production.
  • Work closely with production supervisors and ensure proper training and certifications of all technicians and operators.
  • Adherence to SPC practices to monitor process yields and cost and implement manufacturing improvements based on these metrics.
  • Prepare / assist with manufacturing proposals and estimates for new major programs or major change activity. 
  • Work closely with Quality/Manufacturing/Operations to review and approve operating, set up, and inspection instructions and documents.
  • Support product/process change activities through Change Management system.
  • Follow processes for safety, ESD protection, and Foreign Object Elimination

 

Job Requirements

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Kopin is a defense contractor and is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent
  • 2+ years in supporting/developing production/manufacturing for manual optical mechanical assembly process for commercial, military and/or industrial applications.
  • Experience with mechanical and manual assembly of products.
  • Experience with process validation tasks related to product and processes (equipment qualification, product quality).
  • Experience in applying and reinforcing Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Ability to multi-task and support multiple production shifts.
  • Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Skills to conceptualize and communicate major elements of quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Technical knowledge in the application of engineering, procurement, testing, operations, and practices sufficient to comprehend specified engineering, procurement, testing, operations, and certification requirements.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by successful interaction with various levels of management, state and federal regulators, stakeholders, and suppliers.
  • Advanced ability to work with minimal direction to accomplish program objectives.
  • Self-motivated with high sense of urgency, resourcefulness, and adaptability.
  • Basic software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SPC and shop floor management etc.).

PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years of experience in optical mechanical assemblies or equivalent preferred.
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean certified.
  • Experience working in a Class 100 or better clean room environment.
  • Experience in a high volume, multiple shift manufacturing environment or equivalent.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Able to rotate from sitting to standing.
  • Prolonged sitting and using computers along with being in manufacturing areas.
  • Must be able to follow appropriate gowning procedures in order to go in clean room if necessary (hairnet, safety glasses, clean room apparel/lab coats, latex gloves).
