Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job Description

Qualified candidates are sought to conduct postdoctoral research with Prof. Lynford Goddard (http://psl.mntl.illinois.edu/) with the goal of co-developing optical instrumentation and techniques for device characterization, computational analysis, and/or machine learning. Eligible candidates must have:

  • obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related field within 10 years of the start date of the position,
  • 5 years of coursework or experience designing and building optical instruments and writing code for computational electromagnetics,
  • ability to self-direct research, work collaboratively across disciplines, and think critically, and
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the passion to continually learn.

The successful candidate will have significant experience with free-space, fiber-based, and chip-scale optical devices and systems, with microscopy or spectroscopy, and with scientific programming languages and simulation software. The postdoc will work with interdisciplinary teams on sponsored projects and also have the opportunity to spend part of their time pursuing their own independent research directions and developing professional skills such as mentoring student researchers, writing proposals, and managing projects.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis. Initial appointment is for one year and with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. The desired start date is January 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
