ATA develops embedded processing systems for commercial and DoD applications. Our primary focus involves the application of state-of-the art, FPGA and System-On-Chip (SOC) devices to high performance video processing, adaptive optics, laser communications, imaging sensors, and a wide range of real-time control systems for inertial measurement units, fast steering mirrors, and stabilized telescopes.  ATA is looking for qualified candidates who are interested in working within a small, agile, innovative team and who share a strong desire to create a work environment that is highly collaborative, rewarding and fun.   

 

Job Description

The Advanced Electro-Optic Space Sensors (AEOSS) Program supports Space Situational Awareness (SSA), Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), and the Defensive Space Controls (DSC) mission areas as identified by the Space Vehicles Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) by innovating and developing new visible through infrared materials and detector architectures suitable for high performance operation in the space environment. From physics-based modeling to material growth to device processing and characterization to focal plane array (FPA) development and testing, AEOSS aims to increase the Air Force’s technical advantage using imaging from space.

This person will become a team contributor to a group that designs, simulates, processes, and characterizes detector chips based on II-VI and III-V materials. The selected individual will perform experimental testing daily using cryogenic dewars, source-measure units, spectrometers, blackbodies, and LabVIEW software. Some original design activity will be required to improve experimental setups, including software, to facilitate mobility to remote radiation test sites. Electrical engineer will provide support in test, troubleshooting, experimental design, data analysis, and reports/publications.

Essential Functions:

Perform characterization of visible through long-wavelength infrared materials and detectors using some of the methods below:

  • variable magnetic field Hall Effect,
  • photoluminescence spectroscopy,
  • time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy,
  • time-resolved microwave reflectance decay,
  • Raman spectroscopy,
  • dark current-voltage,
  • photocurrent-voltage,
  • capacitance-voltage,
  • spectral photoresponse,
  • quantum efficiency,
  • deep-level transient spectroscopy, and
  • noise spectroscopy
  • Perform characterization at radiation sites using gamma rays, protons, electrons, or heavy ions.
  • Development of experiments (including mechanical design, electrical part selection, and software writing), data collection, and analysis
  • Loading parts/chips into cryogenic test dewars, wiring new parts and cryogenic test dewars, transporting/lifting cryogenic dewars, filling liquid nitrogen dewars
  • Collecting data using automated LabVIEW software
  • Analyzing data using OriginPro, Matlab, and/or Excel
  • Writing data reports using MS Office products
  • Evaluation of technical feasibility of new sensor materials and technologies

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant Engineering (Electrical, Materials, Physics, etc…) from an accredited four-year university with more than 2 years of experience in data acquisition and electrical characterization
  • Proficiency with standard semiconductor characterization tools, such as source meters, capacitance meters, lock-in amplifiers, Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, black body sources, lasers, optics, cryogenic dewars
  • Hands-on electrical and mechanical interfacing skills
  • LabVIEW and Matlab programming skills
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently, seeking support from team members when required
  • All work is to be done in a laboratory environment
  • Person able to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance

 Desired Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year university with more than 5 years of experience in semiconductor optoelectronics, data acquisition, and instrumentation
  • Current Secret DoD Clearance or higher

Primary Location:

  • Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico
