Job Description



Highest level opto-electro/opto-mechanical systems engineering contributor within IDEX health & Sciences optics business focusing on Life Sciences and IVD instrumentation platforms. Designs or modifies designs of extremely complex systems, subsystems, or components. Plans and directs major projects. Determines and analyzes design approaches and parameters which best fill all engineering requirements. Performs design changes for product improvement/upgrades. Performs complex or unusual tests on equipment. Develops advanced methods/techniques for testing and evaluation. This person will design, build, and test complex prototype equipment and products. Determines part specifications and prepares cost estimates for projects, including material, equipment, and supply requirements. Resolves extremely complex engineering problems. Provides project leadership, technical consultation, work direction, and training to lower level personnel. Works without appreciable direction on assigned projects/programs. Participates in determining objectives of assignments.


  • Plans and implements product development programs, including defining the project philosophy, activities, milestones, and staff requirements, per customer requirements
  • Designs feasibility experiments, facilitating the design and development of an R&D prototype, engineering model, pre-production, model, and the final production model
  • Oversees the day to day development activities including managing the work of engineers and technicians when they are assigned to the specific project
  • Develops and maintains a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project
  • Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget
  • Identifies project staffing requirements and coordinates staffing with supporting organization managers
  • Coordinates the preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages
  • Recommends project personnel to specific phases or aspects of the project such as technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing
  • Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems
  • Directs integration of technical activities and products
  • Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases
  • Prepares interim and completion project reports
  • Complies with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions


  • Production test station & process concept development
  • Interfaces with customers to provide status reports to ensure customer needs are met
  • Provides status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management
  • Provides training to production and technical personnel

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a technical discipline or equivalent; and
  • 15+ years of related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, and public groups


Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems


Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables


  • Extensive experience in developing complete instrumentation platforms
  • Precision imaging including diffraction-limited optical systems
  • Motion control (fast focusing stages, sample handling systems)
  • Lasers, LEDs, cameras, and detectors (image sensors)
  • Optical systems for laser/LED illumination
  • Instrumentation architectures include software/firmware consideration
  • Chemical and biological assays as they impact instrumentation design
  • Flow cells/microfluidics consumables impacting instrumentation design
  • Consumable optical flow cells in automated instrumentation
  • Experience in liquid handling systems
  • Ability to operate in a multi-tasking environment
  • Success in this position requires frequent communication with peers and management
  • These relationships must be built on respect, integrity, cooperation, teamwork, and professionalism
  • Excellent problem solving and project management skills
  • Ability to lead program teams
  • Proficient with Microsoft software
  • Proficient with MathCad, Live Math, Igor Pro, Optical Design software
  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems
  • Ability to write technical reports in concise and accurate English, and present the results orally as required
  • Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment such as MTF benches, interferometers, and photometers, and able to specifying such equipment
  • Hands-on laboratory skills for assembly, alignment, calibration, and evaluation of optical systems
  • Must be able to travel approximately 30% of the time in geographic locations where customs and cultures are unfamiliar
