Employer Description

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will be the world’s largest and most sensitive ground-based gamma-ray observatory. With a telescope array site in each hemisphere, one on La Palma (Spain) and one in Paranal (Chile), it will cover the full night sky, detecting high-energy radiation from the Universe with unprecedented accuracy and sensitivity. Continental Europe will host its headquarters in Bologna (Italy) and the Science Data Management Centre (SDMC) in Zeuthen (Germany).

The Observatory is funded through a combination of in-kind-contributions and directly funded efforts, with more than 10 countries actively participating as shareholders, and more than 150 institutions from 25 countries taking part in the project. The CTAO was promoted to a “Landmark” on the European Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) Roadmap 2018, and was ranked as the main priority among the new ground-based infrastructures in the ASTRONET Roadmap 2022-2035.

Job Description

To strengthen its Project Office in Bologna (Italy), the CTAO is seeking a

Requirements Engineer

to work with other systems engineers and stakeholders to manage the requirements of the observatory.

Your responsibilities:

  • Manage the JAMA requirements tool.
  • Work with systems engineers, domain experts and other stakeholders to capture CTAO requirements at system and subsystem levels and enter them into JAMA. Maintain these requirements on an ongoing basis.
  • Implement and maintain the linkage or flow-down of requirements within JAMA.
  • Support the CTAO change control process by identifying any requirements that are affected by a proposed change request.
  • Implement any changes in the requirements that flow from approved change requests.
  • Generate requirements specification documents by export from JAMA in preparation for their release.
  • Support subsystem work package managers and systems engineers to implement and maintain their lower-level requirements in JAMA.
  • Support the verification processes of the system and subsystems to ensure the coverage of all of the applicable requirements.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Lead Systems Engineer.

Reporting to:  Lead System Engineer

Duty station: The position will be based in the CTAO Headquarters in Bologna, Italy. It will require occasional travel of up to about 2 trips per year, and with durations of a few days to a week, to CTAO and contributors’ sites in Europe and elsewhere.

What we offer: This position is full-time and is funded for the duration of the CTAO construction project (minimum 5 years) with the possibility to transition to an operations position. Contractual details and salary are subject to negotiation.

Job Requirements

Your skills:

Applicants for this position shall fulfil the following minimum requirements:

  • University degree in engineering, technical physics, systems engineering, or other relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working as a requirement engineer in a medium to large scale engineering project using a requirements management tool, ideally JAMA.

The ideal candidate will have experience and demonstrated skills in the following areas:

  • Experience working with the requirements of an international scientific construction project.
  • Familiarity with configuration/change control, quality assurance, project review, and acceptance processes.
  • The ability to work as an effective member of an international, multi-cultural and complex project team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English, knowledge of Spanish will be an asset.
