THEORETICAL QUANTUM INFORMATION SCIENCE

The Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks highly qualified candidates to fill a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty position at any rank. Exceptional scientists from all subfields of theoretical quantum information science are encouraged to apply, particularly those with overlap in atomic, molecular, and optical physics and/or condensed matter. The Department of Physics is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment, with a focus on diversifying the faculty. We are seeking faculty who can teach in these and other areas while contributing to the diversity and excellence in our programs and courses through their research, teaching and service. Senior and mid-career faculty are encouraged to apply in addition to early-career scientists.
Successful candidates are expected to establish and maintain an active and independent research program, teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and provide service to the department, the university, and the profession. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors.
Qualified senior candidates may also be considered for tenured Associate Professor and Full Professor positions as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established in areas of strategic interest to The Grainger College of Engineering. Such areas include, but are not limited to, bioengineering, big data, quantum information, robotics and machine learning. The University of Illinois Department of Physics has strong and expanding programs in quantum information science, and numerous research groups throughout The Grainger College of Engineering tackle issues related to quantum information science. These include theoretical and experimental efforts aimed at studying cold atom physics, quantum many-body systems, strongly correlated systems, topological phases, quantum chaos, quantum optics and photonics, quantum information processing, and superconducting qubits. The Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST) brings together physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians to advance quantum information science research and training.
The Condensed Matter Physics group at the University of Illinois maintains a distinguished tradition of cross-collaboration between theory and experiment, and has been recognized by numerous major awards, including Nobel Prizes to John Bardeen and Anthony Leggett. Every area of modern-day condensed matter physics is represented at Illinois, together with numerous cross-disciplinary programs in atomic, molecular and optical physics, materials science, technology development, and biology. The Institute for Condensed Matter Theory (ICMT) promotes a highly interactive research environment encouraging members to take on the most challenging, long-term research issues.
Our faculty and students are affiliated with and have access to world-class experimental and computational facilities located in on-campus multidisciplinary research (fundamental and translational) centers and laboratories, including: Applied Research Institute, Advanced Materials Testing and Evaluation Laboratory, Aerodynamics Research Laboratory, the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the Center for Hypersonics and Entry Systems Studies, Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, Holonyak Micro & Nanotechnology Lab, the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
A doctoral degree in Physics or a related field is required at the start date, and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full consideration will be given to applications received by November 15, 2022. Applications received after that date may be considered until the position is filled. A start date is expected in the fall of 2023; however, this is negotiable.
