Job Description

In order to further expand its world-class faculty and respond to the needs of the growing fields of optics, the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is announcing a faculty search in Optical Engineering with the possibility of multiple hires. The Wyant College of Optical Sciences is the world’s premier optical institute, with outstanding faculty members, an international student body, a comprehensive optics curriculum, pioneering research programs in areas including optical engineering, image science, photonics and optical physics, and close relationships with the optics industry. Salary for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Applications are invited from junior, mid-career, and senior candidates. This tenure/tenure-track position anticipates demonstrated strength in the area of optical engineering, including:

  • Cultivating a world-class research program in optical engineering.
  • Establishing a strong teaching record in optical engineering.
  • Participating in both undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Participating in service and outreach for the College.

Preferred candidates will demonstrate a record of innovation and strength in areas such as optical design, engineering, instrumentation, and systems, with a broad variety of potential application areas including space or astronomical optics, optical metrology, remote sensing, consumer optics, biomedical optics, optics in defense, and optics in manufacturing.

Applicants should ideally have a proven track record of teaching and research, including a clear potential to continue or establish a substantial research program in optical engineering that is capable of attracting program funding from industry and/or government. For private sector or government laboratory applicants, lack of a proven record could be remedied with other related credentials, including strong communications skills and leadership or experience in innovative optical engineering and/or building innovative optical hardware.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a long term and successful career in optical engineering at the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. In addition to sustaining a research group, the position requires academic engagement with students and colleagues, and with the optics industry and government agencies. The University of Arizona is a vibrant and diverse academic environment with extensive inter departmental and cross college research projects. Faculty may have joint appointments and are expected to benefit and capitalize from these inter departmental collaborations, as well as from collaborations with other institutions.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Optics, Physical Sciences, Engineering or related field, and teaching or industrial experience in optics is desirable.
