Photonics Focus is the award-winning print membership magazine of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. This publication showcases scientific discovery and innovative real-world applications of optics and photonics, along with industry-focused articles, career advice, and Society news. Our goal is to publish a magazine so relevant and engaging that our members look forward to receiving it in the mail each month.
We are looking for a talented writer, editor, and science communicator to join our communications team as the Managing Editor of Photonics Focus, where you will share the latest scientific advances in light-based technologies from around the world, including biomedical optics, astronomy, lasers, solar, quantum, and more!
This full-time position is located at our headquarters in beautiful Bellingham, WA. Remote candidates who can work during Pacific Coast business hours will be considered. Ideal candidates will have at least three years of experience in science journalism, will be organized, collaborative, have up-to-date technology skills, an unfailingly positive attitude, and be comfortable communicating with scientists, in person and online.

Applications must include writing samples that illustrate an ability to write about advanced science and technology, both accurately and accessibly.
- Acquire content for Photonics Focus: identify topics, article ideas, and contributors based on the magazine’s scope, organizational goals, and community interests
- Write original content for Photonics Focus, including front-of-book articles and occasional features
- Travel to SPIE meetings to generate stories for the above work
- Develop and maintain an engaged network of freelance and volunteer writers
- Provide developmental editing for articles written by freelancers and house staff. This includes helping writers develop scope, determining length, negotiating edits, and creating engaging headlines with an eye to SEO
- Select artwork and illustrations to accompany magazine articles
- Produce the magazine online, using a content management system
- Oversee publication quality and accuracy, both in print and online. This includes fact checking and proofing in accordance with the house style guide
- Perform other administrative tasks associated with magazine publication
Education & Experience Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of science, math, English, or journalism, or equivalent experience. Two years of direct leadership experience as a project manager, team lead, committee chair, etc. required. Experience writing, editing, and/or publishing experience for a science, math, engineering or technology magazine preferred.

Compensation includes: Competitive wage, annual discretionary bonus, defined contribution retirement plan with additional company match, and paid-time-off beginning at 31 days per year.
