Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania is ranked 3rd best medical school in the nation by US News in 2020. The Department of Radiation Oncology, Perelman Center of Advanced Medicine, has all the latest technologies in radiation oncology, including MR, PET/CT, 4DCT, 3 Truebeam Linacs, 2 Halcyon Linacs, HDR, and IBA proton therapy machines with 4 gantries and 1 fixed beam with full PBS capabilities. There is also an active Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Program that was funded by an NIH P01 since 2001. There are a host of high power diode lasers (532nm, 630nm, 650 nm, 690 nm, 730 nm) suitable for activating most commercial photosensitizers. A fully functional PDT Physics lab provides PDT dosimetry tools for biomedical studies of light transport in turbid medium and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. It has a small animal radiation research platform (SARRP) with both FLASH proton and conventional photon capabilities.
Applicants are sought for a POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP in the Department of Radiation Oncology’s Medical Physics Division. The related research will employ modern biomedical optics techniques to carry out in-vivo Cherenkov imaging of patient undergoing radiation therapy (mostly electrons and photons, e.g., Total skin electron therapy (TSET) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)/volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) photon treatment, but can be expanded to proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) treatment), Monte Carlo simulation of transports of both ionizing radiation and the subsequent non-ionizing Cherenkov photons, 3D patient surface imaging and deformable registration of surface mesh with either a template body mesh or CT, and developing schemes for TSET treatment planning and/or quality assurance of IMRT treatment delivery. This project is funded by an NIH grant (R21) and is for 2 years.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in engineering, physical sciences or equivalent is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven track record in biomedical research, especially in optical spectroscopy and in finite-element analysis. Experience in the following is highly desired: programming in Matlab, GEANT4/GAMO Monte Carlo, COMSOL FEM, medical imaging processing, photon transport in tissue, fiber optics and lasers, and optical instrumentation design.
