Job Description

Alcon is one of the world’s leading suppliers of laser based ophthalmic surgical equipment. We are seeking a laser engineer to join the R&D photonics division for development of state-of-the-art equipment and delivery devices. In this role, you will provide in-depth knowledge of surgical instrumentation domain as a technical leader across a range of engineering disciplines including Lasers, Semiconductors, Controls, Opto-Electronics, Optics, Fiber Optics, Optomechanical, and Materials.

 

  • Derive product design requirements based on top-level commercial/customer input.
  • Direct the design, assembly, alignment, measurement, testing, analysis, and troubleshooting of laser, optical, illumination, fiber optic, and single-use devices.
  • Lead medical device development activities such as prototyping and testing, pilot builds, V&V, risk assessment, and ramp-up to production validation.
  • Technical leader and SME for the organization who mentors peers about the domain and related technology.
  • Support all aspects of documentation and design control through ECN, ECO, and Wind-chill.
  • Contribute to patent portfolio and strategy development.
  • Identify technical, project schedule, and commercial viability risks.
  • Run cross-functional trade-off reviews and drive to design decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership with the ability to work individually and in a team lead role. Complete project assignments to schedule in a multi-project environment.
  • In-depth knowledge in laser physics, semi-conductor devices, & control of semiconductor devices.
  • Knowledge of thermal management of lasers and optical systems utilizing TEC
  • Basic knowledge of digital and analog electronics.
  • Hands-on in prototyping and testing optical and electro-optical systems and components, including but not limited to sensors, lasers, fiber-optics products.
  • Support the transfer of new products to manufacturing and manufacturing development activities.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional development teams including EE, SW, QA, and Mfg functions.
  • Stay current with market and technology developments including market trends, competitive products and research in Bio-Instrumentation and related photonics.
  • The ideal candidate should have the drive and aptitude to continuously learn about new fields and technologies and implement novel solutions to problems.
  • Must have very good problem solving skills and attention to details.
  • Must be a self-starter and a fast learner.
  • Must work efficiently both independently and within a team.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13yrs; Assoc.+9yrs; M.S.+2yrs; PhD+0yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English.
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience
  • Industry standard tools and methods for laser, optical, Opto-Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Domain knowledge in lasers, control, photonics, optics, Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems, and fiber optics
  • Optical, electro-optical, and Optomechanical metrology and testing practices
  • Architecture design, requirements and risk management, medical device V&V, reprocessing, and single-use devices.
  • Development of laser & Illumination systems
  • Precision manufacturing techniques and familiarity with active or passive alignment of optical devices both free-space and fiber coupled
  • Biomedical product or medical device development
  • Vendor and supplier management for Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems, sub-systems, components or OEM
  • Experience and proficiency with engineering development tools such as Matlab or LabVIEW for development, data processing and analysis
  • Ability to lead small team of engineers
