Applied Technology Associates (ATA) is seeking an Embedded Computer Vision Engineering/Science Intern in support to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. ATA is supporting AFRL in a variety of areas related to the design and flight of space vehicles. One of those areas is in the application and implementation of computer vision for autonomous and robotic spacecraft functions. ATA is looking for qualified candidates who are interested in working within a small, agile, innovative team supporting Air Force projects and who share a strong desire to create a work environment that is highly collaborative, rewarding, and fun. The successful candidate will serve as an engineering/science intern within AFRL/ATA’s Resilient Autonomous Navigation Guidance and Robotic Systems (RANGRS) team and contribute to a collection of projects to help with the development of algorithms and their implementation in a variety of programming languages. Current projects include support to three different laboratories for the purposes of raising the technology readiness levels (TRLs) of algorithms and software. The projects focus on the development and implementation of embedded, real-time, computer vision techniques for robotic servicing, repair, and assembly and rendezvous and proximity operations of spacecraft. The laboratories emulate many aspects of spacecraft flight providing real-time testbeds and verification and validation platforms for on-orbit spacecraft algorithms and software. We work in a software environment that includes Windows and Linux running MATLAB, Simulink, ROS, Python, and C/C++. Our hardware environment for simulation is Intel workstations, while our real-time environment is primarily Raspberry PIs.
The Intern’s duties will include:
- Develop and implement computer vision algorithms for spacecraft navigation and robotic functions
- Develop simulations for generating imagery data
- Develop simulations for testing computer vision algorithms and implementations

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position. Days and hours (8-20 per week) are nominally within a Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday.
Travel is primarily local during the business day.
Required Education and Experience
- Attending an accredited Engineering or Computer Science program at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. level
- S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance
- Background or course work in Computer Vison
Preferred Education and Experience
- Active U.S. Department of Defense security clearance
- Experience with embedded and/or real-time computer vision algorithms
- Background in spacecraft dynamics and/or guidance, navigation, and control
- Experience programming in C/C++
- Experience with revision control systems such as Git, Mercurial, or Subversion
