The Lidar and Sensor Calibration Section of the Photonic Technologies Department at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated scientist to conceive, design, and conduct experimental research and technology development in advanced laser remote sensing in support of national security space programs.  The successful applicant will support these activities through physics-based modeling of optical systesms, evaluation and reserach into state-of-the art component technologies, and the design, build, and test of system prototypes. 

Job Description

Key Functions

  • Conduct laboratory research to understand and improve the state-of-the art technolgies for active remote sensing systems
  • Design, build, and test prototypes of advanced sensors
  • Develop and execute modeling/simulation tools to understand link budgets and trade space for the design of laser remote sensing systems 
  • Assess contractor simulation models and results; verify results using alternative methods and approaches
  • Participate in interdisciplinary and inter-organizational teams and external collaborations on programs within areas of research
  • Devise and recommend improvements in data reduction and analysis methods
  • Prepare reports and presentations to document knowledge generation and outcomes of customer/contractor support
  • Support offsite field campaigns or customer meetings as required
Job Requirements

Required

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in applied physics, optics, electrical engineering, chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Experience or coursework in optical system design, lasers, optical detectors, lidar systems, or applied laser spectroscopy
  • Experience or coursework in instrument control and data acquisition software such as LabView, and data analysis/computational simulation software such as MatLab, Mathematica or Python
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

 

Preferred

  • Ph.D. in applied physics, optics, electrical engineering, chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Familiarity with solid-state laser technology, elecro-optic materials and techniques, and nonlinear optical materials and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and customers
