Director of Research, Development & Engineering–Optical Systems

JOB SUMMARY:

-As the Director of Research, Development & Engineering–Optical Systems at CVI Laser Optics you will be tasked with building a world-class engineering team to help accelerate growth with our OEM customers that heavily utilize optical components and optical sub-assemblies

-CVI Laser Optics has built a reputation as one of the premier optical component manufacturers in the world and is a vertically integrated factory with onsite facilities for machine work, optical component fabrication, optical coatings, and advanced optical sub-assemblies; our customers are industry leaders in a variety of markets including, but not exclusive to, semiconductor, defense, laser machining, and additive manufacturing

-The ideal candidate will leverage the broader IDEX Scientific and Fluidics and Optics’ manufacturing capabilities, processes and people to enable you to collaborate with our customers’ engineers in creating manufacturable designs for volume production in addition to collaborating with senior leadership to define our technology roadmap and investments to serve our customer’s needs

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Direction and coordination of all NPD engineering activities and personnel

-Assists the product management, sales, and marketing organizations to maximize the competitiveness and responsiveness of our products and processes

-Completes designs as per schedule and budget

-Develops cost effective, manufacturable and appropriate optomechanical designs

-Leads and promotes interaction with other departments including manufacturing engineering, operations, QC, assembly and other manufacturing

-Manages and consistently implements the Peer Design Review Process to improve the appropriateness, cost-effectiveness, and accuracy of all departmental design activities

-Participates in proposal development and owns NRE estimates and technical statements of work

-Promotes teamwork inside and outside of Engineering Department

-Provides budgets to support the planning processes and manages costs throughout the year consistent with approved expense strategies and budgets

-Serves as technical spokesperson for CVI Laser Optics

-Serves as a key interface with customers, and takes their needs and requirements as inputs to create high-value product solutions

-Helps develop long-term technology roadmaps for CVI Laser Optics and associated IDEX optics businesses that are aligned with our customer's technology roadmaps

-Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions

-Works cooperatively with other IDEX facilities to support multi-site customer opportunities

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-10+ years’ experience with companies or research labs in the optics and photonics market

-Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Optical, Mechanical, Systems)

-Experience developing innovative product solutions using skills in optoelectronic and optomechanical systems engineering for OEMs in capital equipment markets

-Experience designing or modifying designs of complex laser systems

-Technical experience working with high power lasers (including fiber lasers), scanning optics, and detectors

-Understanding of high-performance optical coatings for laser systems

-Experience with any of the following design interfaces: SolidWorks, Zemax OpticStudio®, CODE V, and any other modeling or optical design software

PREFERRED CREDENTIALS:

-Ability to communicate highly technical information to others

-Able to communicate in concise and accurate English (verbal and written reports/presentations)

-Advocate for the customer inside an organization

-Aptitude to work well across all functions and provide technical leadership as internal project champion

-Capability to travel globally to support customer visits and travel 35-50% (international and domestic)

-Comfortable working in a dynamic technical engineering environment

-Experience and knowledge of manufacturing test engineering, operations including procurement, planning and quality systems

-Familiarity with laser-based additive manufacturing equipment a plus

-Proficiency to manage others in technical engineering roles and managing project budgets including staffing resources

-Software/design/modeling experience, e.g., Zeemax or Code V, FEA software, CAD

-Strong communicator who can engage with customers to understand their problems and translate these to develop unique solutions at the sub-system level

-Strong project planning experience with an ability to coordinate across different sites involving multiple teams

-Understanding developing diagnostic equipment (metrology) for testing and evaluation

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

-Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations

-Capability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis

REASONING SKILLS:

-Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

-Capacity to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

-Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals

-Capacity to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customer’s regulatory agencies, or members of the business community

-Aptitude to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format, as well as the sheer skill to effectively present information

-German language skills would be ideal
